FEMA Extends Opportunity for Comments on Change in DC Flood Zone

Washington, DC -The District Department of Environment (DDOE) is providing notice that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has extended the period for public comment on the proposed new flood insurance rate map and studies for the District of Columbia. The comment date has been extended until March 7, 2008.

The proposed flood zone changes could affect many businesses, requiring them to secure flood insurance and comply with stricter building codes. Although FEMA is accepting public comments, the opportunity to appeal the proposed modifications has closed. FEMA will issue a Letter of Final Determination on March 26, 2008, which will state that the District must adopt a new or updated compliant flood zone management ordinance which has not been updated since 1985. The District's compliance will keep it qualified to participate in the National Flood Insurance Program.
