Weatherization Plus

Weatherization Plus is an expansion of two federally funded programs; the Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP), and the Residential Conservation Assistance Program (RCAP). Operation of Weatherization Plus will help to accelerate the installation of energy measures in low-income homes that save electricity. WAP has been operating successfully for a number of years; however, the number of homes needing weatherization services remains high due to a lack of financial resources. WAP has evolved into a whole house approach. Weatherization Plus will complement this approach by including an evaluation of the building envelope, mechanical systems, base loads, indoor air quality and occupants to determine the energy, comfort, health and safety needs of the building. Under the expansion of the RCAP program, additional electricity-saving measures will by installed in all qualified homes. These measures include cost-effective refrigerator replacements, lighting replacements, water heater wraps, hot water pipe wraps and low-flow showerheads and faucets. An additional 950 homes are expected to be completed within the first two years of the WAP Plus program. WAP Plus has been incorporated into updated regulations governing the US Department of Energy WAP. The updated regulation incorporates base load electricity energy efficiency measures, including refrigerator and stove replacements.
