The DSI program was established through a partnership under the US Department of Energy's Million Solar Roofs Initiative. The goal of DSI is to install 500 solar energy systems in the District by 2010. The initiative includes two types of solar technology: solar electric (photovoltaic) systems that produce electricity from sunlight, and solar thermal systems that produce heat for domestic hot water, space heating and heating swimming pools.
