Environmental Programs

An important foundation for the District Department of the Environment is the former Environmental Health Administration (EHA) of the Department of Health. Elevating EHA to Cabinet-level status demonstrates the District’s commitment to preventing and controling environmentally related diseases while protecting and preserving the ecological system in the District of Columbia.

The Environmental Quality and Safety division of DDOE protects and monitors air and water quality through its Environmental Quality office, and seeks to prevent pollution and serious health risks through its office of Hazardous Materials and Toxic Substances.
