Environmental Educational Camping

For elementary and middle schools, students ages 6 to 12.

Campers participate in a week-long environmental education program conducted at a residential camp on the Potomac River in Scotland MD. This Watershed Protection Division program is conducted at camp Riverview or Camp Brown in partnership with the DC Department of Parks and Recreation and/or the Greater Metropolitan Police Girls and Boys Club. A number of environmental organizations work together to help students see and make the connection from the neighbor streams and rivers to the Chesapeake Bay.

To enjoy these natural resources for camping, fishing, crabbing, boating and playing along the beach, campers learn they must make choices about how to protect and preserve the natural landscape. Campers participate in hands-on educational activities such as planting native and vegetable gardens, restoring the shoreline with wetland plants and learning how to compost and test the water. The programs are presented in three phases: (1) Introduction and Preparation; (2) Field Study or Project; and (3) Reflections.
