Office of Enforcement and Environmental Justice
The mission of DDOE’s Office of Enforcement and Environmental Justice (OEEJ) is to conserve and protect the air, land, water, and natural resources of the District of Columbia and to ensure a safe and healthy environment by developing and implementing effective enforcement practices, supporting DDOE’s environmental enforcement programs, implementing DDOE’s Environmental Justice Program, and serving as the agency contact for enforcement matters involving U.S. EPA Region 3.
Environmental Program Support
OEEJ supports and coordinates enforcement-related initiatives and activities for DDOE’s environmental divisions and programs. It develops enforcement policies and procedures, maintains data on agency enforcement activities, manages DDOE’s civil infractions program, and facilitates staff training on enforcement and case management matters.
Environmental Justice
OEEJ administers DDOE’s Environmental Justice (EJ) Program to ensure that District citizens who are low-income, minority, or have limited English proficiency receive equal protection under environmental laws and have meaningful opportunities to participate in environmental decision making undertaken by DDOE. DDOE’s Environmental Justice Coordinator is in the OEEJ.
Region 3 LiaisonOEEJ serves as the agency’s key liaison with
EPA Region 3 in Philadelphia regarding agency-wide enforcement matters. In this role, OEEJ coordinates implementation of enforcement initiatives designed to improve inspector competencies, foster multimedia and federal/state joint enforcement activities, and track and manage enforcement and compliance data.
