Event Description: This Event is open to the public and to the media.
On April 26, 2008, the Anacostia Watershed Society (AWS) and 35 other partner organizations will celebrate Earth Day 2008 by removing trash and debris from more than 30 sites along the Anacostia River in the District of Columbia and Maryland. Each year, stormwater runoff from storm drains and other sources dumps 20,000 tons of trash and debris into the Anacostia River. For the last two decades, AWS has lead efforts to remove this pollution from the water and shoreline of the river. Last year, more than 2,000 local residents volunteer to remove 49 tons of trash from the watershed. The 2008 cleanup promises to be much larger.
Following the cleanup, AWS will sponsor an Earth Day Rally celebration for all participating volunteers and the general public at Seafarers Yacht Club in the District of Columbia. Each year, the location of this rally rotates between DC and Maryland to highlight two facts: (1) that the river and its pollution refuse to obey political boundaries, and (2) that inter-jurisdictional cooperation on environmental policy must proceed in order for the river to be truly restored. The rally provides participants with free food and entertainment, as well as an opportunity for the Mayor to convey his thoughts about the river, the local environment, and government policies aimed at its restoration and protection.
