2010 Mayor's Environmental Excellence Awards
The Mayor's Environmental Excellence Awards recognize outstanding businesses and organizations for their environmental stewardship, innovative best practices, pollution prevention and resource conservation. We encourage you to apply for an award.
Categories for the 2010 Mayor's Environmental Excellence Awards
You may choose to apply under one of these five (5) specific categories:
- Construction/Development
- Restaurant/Food Service
- Hotel

- Partner (association, non-profit)
- Innovation in Green Products or Services
|
You may choose to apply under a general category:
- Small Business (100 or fewer employees)
|
- Large Business (More than 100 employees)
|
Partner of the Year
This award will be given to an organization that promotes environmental practices on behalf of the District of Columbia and its residents. This category is open to associations, business improvement districts, non-profit organizations, and other partners.
Eligibility
- The business/organization must be located in the District of Columbia (the corporate headquarters may be located outside the District).
- The business/organization must be in compliance with all District of Columbia regulations (a compliance check of existing records will be conducted on a facility applying for an award).
- All winners must agree to allow a summary of their award application to be published as a "case study." The case study will be permanently displayed on DDOE's website and will become part of an on-line library of environmental best practices in the District. All award winners will have final approval of any text posted on the DDOE website. Any proprietary information will be removed at the award winners' request.
How to Apply
- Download the application cover sheet and fill in the requested fields.
- Submit the completed cover sheet with your award application. The award application should be no more than three (3) typed pages describing how your facility/organization strives for environmental excellence.
- Topics may include energy/water conservation, renewable energy investment, climate protection, pollution prevention or reduction, resource conservation, low impact development and storm water management best practices, green building construction and operation, overall sustainability, innovative technology, innovative green product service or product development, recycling, environmental leadership, environmental education, and employee commitment. Please include details such as costs, savings, reduction in air emissions, energy or water savings, pounds of pollution reduced, and environmental benefits.
- You may include photos within your 3-page application.
- Applications will be scored on the following criteria: 50 points for environmental impact and benefits, 30 points for social impact, 20 points for commitment by senior management and employees. " There is no charge to apply.
- It is helpful to send an email to let us know you are planning to apply into our tracking system.
Applicants may call DDOE with questions or ask for feedback on their application. This is not a writing contest, but a review of your environmental projects and practices. DDOE staff may call you if you need to re-submit additional detail not included in your application.
