Commissioner Robert A. Jordan partnered with the Fairfax Village Community to help connect District youth and local residents to new amenities that promote sustainability. Together, they converted long-abandoned basketball and tennis courts into a new community garden and multi-purpose site. To make this restoration project possible, Commissioner Jordan brought members of the local community together with Washington Parks and People and the District Department of the Environment.  He then partnered with the Department of youth and Rehabilitation Services to help develop job training opportunities for teens.  The restored site will provide fresh food for local residents, prepare District youth for new jobs, and serve as an amenity for the community.

A key component of the plan is the incorporation of a youth job training program that provides the workforce practical and academic experience while building the community garden.  People are paid through a partnership with the D.C. Department of Employment Services, job trained through University of D.C. and Department of Labor.  For the community, the garden is an oasis in an area defined as a food desert and marred by high levels of hypertension, diabetes, and obesity.  Projects like these raise the morale, education on healthy living, and ultimately the quality of life for residents.
