Case Study - Andrea Northup

Andrea Northup: Winner of a 2012 Mayor's Sustainability Award

In 2008, Andrea Northup had a vision for linking school cafeterias with local farmers to create a healthier, more sustainable food system. Today, Andrea’s vision is a reality. Thanks to relentless networking with farm to school experts around the country, coaxing funding opportunities from local resources, talking with local farmers, lobbying District political leaders, and rallying public support, Andrea almost single-handedly created an organization that counts hundreds of supporters and volunteers and is making a difference in the way children eat every day.

The D.C. Farm to School Network works regularly with school food programs for all 127 public schools and about 90 charter schools. The organization produces events, such as DC Farm to School Week and Strawberries & Salad Greens, reaching approximately 50 schools with hands-on education and more than 200 schools with local food items.

Andrea was also a principal architect of language within the District's 2010 "Healthy Schools Act" that makes the District one of the few jurisdictions in the country to provide extra funding for local farm produce in school meals.
