Fulya Kocak - Mayor's 2014 Sustainability Award Winner
For the past 15 years, Fulya Kocak has followed her personal mission - and professional passion - to become a leader and innovator in sustainable design and construction in Washington, D.C. She has been a key figure with one of the city's largest general contractors and has evangelized the Mayor's Sustainable DC Plan, the U.S. Green Building Council, and the LEED certification program.
Making a Local Impact
Fulya supports the Sustainable DC Plan as a tireless volunteer, working with local green non- profit organizations and industry groups to promote sustainability. Fulya has been a leader in promoting the city's first green construction codes, dedicating countless hours as a member of the DCRA Green Building Technical Advisory Group, ensuring cost effectiveness, constuctability and applicability.
Currently, Fulya serves as the chairwoman of USGBC's National Capital Region Chapter, following the group's mission to engage, educate, and encourage the community to live within and advance a sustainable, ecologically restorative, and economically-prosperous built environment. As the leader of this organization, Fulya emphasizes that everyone in the Washington, D.C., community has a right to live, study, and work in green and healthy buildings. Fulya and the chapter continue to focus on "Greening Schools" in the District by collaborating with DC Public Schools, Department of General Services, parents, and building professionals.
A Leader in Green Construction
As a construction operations professional, Fulya has made a direct impact on dozens of sustainable structures and facilities in Washington, D.C. As Clark's Director of Sustainability, Fulya is responsible for the full scale of the company's green building activities. Last year, alone, the company put more than $713 million of green building space in place on Washington, D.C. projects seeking LEED certification.
Fulya has developed a "green tool kit" that ensures a consistent and efficient approach to sustainable construction among all Clark projects. Additionally, she implements best practices to strategically improve energy and water efficiency, limit land disturbance, reduce pollution, increase construction waste recycling, and promote deep energy retrofits.
