Anacostia River Nutrients and Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) TMDL

Friday, December 2, 2011

The Anacostia River watershed covers portions of Maryland and the District.  Most of the non-tidal tributaries lie within Maryland, and most of the tidal waters are within the District’s boundaries. This total maximum daily load (TMDL) for biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), total nitrogen (TN), and total phosphorous (TP) in the Anacostia watershed was developed through a cooperative agreement between US Environmental Protection Agency Region 3 (EPA), the District Department of the Environment (DDOE), and Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE).

TMDLs are a tool to be used for meeting the water quality standards for their designated uses.  The overall objective of the TMDLs in this document is to reduce nitrogen, phosphorus, and BOD to allow for their designated used of the protection of aquatic life and water contact recreation uses.   The TMDL was approved by EPA on June 5, 2008.

The following documents include TMDLs for biochemical oxygen demand, total nitrogen, and total phosphorous for portions of the Anacostia River, Watts Branch, and Lower Beaverdam Creek within the District.
