Washington, D.C. – January 23, 2014 – The District Department of the Environment (DDOE) has partnered with green technology company GoingGreenToday.com to launch an innovative, city-wide economic and environmental savings program to help residents use simple daily tips and strategies to save money and become more environmentally friendly, DDOE announced today. The DC Office of Planning is also partnering with DDOE on this effort.

The Do It For DC! Challenge, powered by GoingGreenToday.com, will help advance the citywide goals of the Sustainable DC Plan. It aims to return $136 million to the local economy and cut 614 million pounds from the city’s carbon footprint through the combined actions of thousands of residents.  Participants will receive one action each day for 90 days through the free, personalized online plan, helping them become more environmentally sustainable in their daily lives, reducing their carbon footprint by up to 33 percent and saving up to $2,000 per year.

The challenge will help to unify efforts of civic organizations, DC environmental groups, universities, businesses, faith-based organizations, and international delegations.

"I am thrilled that the Do It For DC! Challenge is being made available to people citywide,” says DDOE Director Keith A. Anderson. “Full participation of residents and businesses is central to ensuring that the District becomes the greenest, healthiest, most livable city in the nation. The Do It For DC! Challenge’s tailored plan — with its step-by-step plan— allows everyone to be fully engaged.” Director Anderson adds,  “Each time a District resident achieves a Do It For DC! goal, the entire city and our local environment benefit."
"With just three months until Earth Day, this is the perfect time to launch Do It For DC! and encourage residents to sign up for their 90-day action plan,” said Scott Ankeny, founder of Do It For DC! and GoingGreenToday.com. “We are excited to be working with DDOE to help DC fulfill its own sustainability goals.” According to Ankeny, as more people and organizations sign up for the challenge, more money will be returned to both individuals and the local economy, and city's carbon footprint will continue to decrease—“It’s a win-win for residents, the District, and the environment.”

To sign up for the challenge, residents must log on to www.goinggreentoday.com/dc. They will be asked to fill out a brief lifestyle assessment survey, which will be used to create a personalized action plan, including specific environmental tips and the amount of money and carbon emissions they can save.
