Washington, D.C. – January 22, 2015 –The District Department of the Environment (DDOE) and the DC Sustainable Energy Utility (DCSEU) have launched the Solar Advantage Plus Program to help low-income District of Columbia residents install solar panels on their homes. This program will also help increase the use of clean and renewable energy in the city.

Rebates will cover the full cost to install solar panels on single-family homes owned or rented by low-income District residents. Rebates are provided on a first-come, first-served basis with the following eligibility requirements:

  • Households must meet the income requirements for the program;
  • Homeowners must contract with a solar installer that is authorized by the DC Sustainable Energy Utility (DCSEU);
  • Homeowners must provide the solar installer with a copy of their Government-issued photo identification, proof of income for each income-earning individual within the home, and the most recent Pepco bill for the property;
  • The authorized installer will design and install a solar photovoltaic (PV) system free of charge to the homeowner and will receive rebates from DDOE and DCSEU;
  • The solar PV system must be installed on a verifiable physical address within the District of Columbia; and
  • The solar PV system must be installed and operational by September 30, 2015.

Acting Director Tommy Wells noted the significance of the new Solar Advantage Plus Program, “Combining resources from both DDOE and DCSEU will allow us to align the District’s renewable energy offerings and increase participation of low-income residents. This is important if we are to truly realize our energy goals for a more sustainable District of Columbia.”
