District’s Air Quality Status

Data from the District’s ambient air monitors show attainment for five of the six criteria air pollutants for which the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency established national ambient air quality standards (NAAQS) to improve public health and welfare.  The chart below shows the measured air quality in 2013 compared to the NAAQS for five of those pollutants.

The District and the metropolitan area are in nonattainment of NAAQS for ground-level ozone, also known as smog.  Controlling air pollution from on-road and off-road vehicles and cooperation amongst states and regions to address transported pollution are critical for mitigating air quality issues in the District.
