Green Zone Environmental Program GZEP

Green Zone Environmental Program Logo
Welcome to Mayor Vincent C. Gray's Green Zone Environmental Program (GZEP), one of the largest green jobs training programs for youth in the nation. GZEP introduces District youth, ages 14 to 21, to the green job labor market, exposing them to numerous exciting career paths and offers academic enrichment opportunities. The program's primary goal is to afford young adults an opportunity to develop the skills and work ethic necessary to succeed in the workplace. District youth workers participating in GZEP work on projects that have immeasurable sustainability benefits on the District.

About GZEP 2013
GZEP operates under the auspices of the District Department of the Environment (DDOE). It is a six week program that begins in late July and ends in mid August. District youth from the District's Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) will participate in this year's program. Youth workers will learn about the environment through projects that entail beautification projects, graffiti removal, and invasive plant removal. Classroom and field-based training on environmental issues will also be provided. Work projects are made possible through collaboration among DDOE, other District agencies, non-profit community groups, and private partners.

Seeking Supervisors
Looking for a rewarding opportunity? The GZEP is an excellent way for those interested in the environment, and conservation fields, to gain invaluable work and leadership experience while making a difference in young people's lives. As a supervisor and team leader at GZEP, you will lead the next generation of conservationist and land stewards in a host of environmental and sustainability tasks. These tasks will result in rebuilding neighborhoods and creating greener communities. Here is a glimpse of some of our youth workers' accomplishments in 2012:
  • Adverted over 10,895 pounds of litter from reaching the Anacostia River
  • Managed the community garden in DuPont Park
  • Assisted with the SYEP 11th Street Bridge Project
  • Installed storm drain markers throughout the District
  • Completed 1,586 Community Clean-up Projects
