The RiverSmart Homes program also offers a series of rebates for trees, rain barrels, rain gardens, and impervious surface removal. Any D.C. single family homeowner is eligible to apply for the rebates, and homeowners that have already participated in the RiverSmart Homes program can also take advantage of the rebates.
District homeowners who purchase and install rain barrels or cisterns are eligible for a rebate. The rebate amount is calculated based on the volume of the rain barrel or cistern. Rebates are issued as a direct reimbursement at a rate of $1 per gallon stored by the rain barrel or cistern. The minimum volume required is 50 gallons, which would provide a $50 rebate. The maximum rebate is $500 for a rain barrel or cistern that holds 500 gallons or more. DC Greenworks administers the rain barrel and cistern rebate on behalf of DDOE. Visit DC Greenworks for eligibility and application information.
District homeowners who purchase and plant an eligible tree on their property can receive a rebate. The rebate amount varies ($50 or $100) depending on the species of tree planted. Species noted for their large canopy and significant environmental benefits qualify for rebates up to $100 per tree. Casey Trees administers the tree rebate on behalf of DDOE. Visit Casey Trees for the eligible species list and application information.
District homeowners who install landscaping projects that reduce and/or treat stormwater runoff from impervious surfaces on their property are eligible for a rebate. The rebate amount is calculated based on the total square footage of impervious area that is treated as a result of the project (the treatment area). Rebates are issued as a direct reimbursement at a rate of $1.25 per square foot of treatment area. The minimum square footage that must be treated is 400 square feet, which would provide a $500 rebate. The maximum rebate is $1,200. The Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay administers the landscaping rebate on behalf of DDOE. Visit Landscaping Rebates to review the Homeowner Guide and Rebate Application.
